I am a writer as well, even if I don't do so as a professional, rather, as an enjoyment, and, within reason, I am not always overly constrained by ST canon or convention, and depending on the subject...I certainly am aware of the last we saw of 8472, and, yes, there were no guarantees given, , since there were no subsequent attacks, or so far as known, no actual infiltration by them into Starfleet,so, one can consider them a non-starter from that standpoint...but, it needn't limit one's imagination in finding a way to reintroduce a danger a la fanfic....'there are always possiblilties'. I think as far as the Hirogen goes, to me, there would be a lot of resistance to abandoning their Hunt...I was just watching a syndicated SG-Atlantis ep last night(I only have digital airwave) in which, offered the chance by the humans and Dr. Keller to be 'cured' of their Feeding, 'Todd' contemplates this potential fundamental change in their culture...and the Hirogen had been at this for centuries, as well, I believe. I bet there would be 'purists' aplenty out there, who'd se the hunts, 'sacred' thing as it is, to be diluted, and polluted....no true kill or prey being one without real blood, as it were...If they could reach the AQ, of course, they'd be all too happy to start up the game there, but, then, Starfleet would be on them... I wonder if the Species 8472 in 'Prey' was the only one of that race found and tracked by them....enough such occurences would draw the attention of their leadership, and begin another conflict...Prey-hunting is one thing, but, would their race be prepared for an all-out fight? They've been represented by hunters in Voyager encounters, though of course there are people like the young engineer...It seems clear their society must have sufficient structure to field specialists, as well as hunters....I can picture their homeworld, perhaps even with some venue, or 'hunting grounds', where captured aliens are pitted against natives(As was shown in the ST Novel 'The Final Reflection') in the Year Games, off the cuff as an idea....though a Hunter would prefer to stalk his prey(And are there FEMALE ones, too?) in their natural environment...It's clearly a significant part of their culture...but HOW central? All we can do is guess...and that's part of the allure of any race, be it 8472, or they...Does their culture have a military force, to defend a homeworld, if it exists as a cohesive, literal structure any longer? Interesting question. IF so, with enough 'contact' with the wrong alien race, and, they could find themselves up the creek and facing a war with some equally-aggressive civilzation, who doesn't take lightly to having their people hunted down. Do the Hirogen worry about such things? What about a centralized, or shared database, where all the scattered hunter-ships can access, and learn about previous hunts...or, would this not prove, from a competitive standpoint, detrimental to an 'edge' for another team...As far as we know, their society at large has never been at war...but then, it'd be hard, wouldn't it, to make war in the the strictly conventional naval -troop engagement sense...and hunting down a race, if they are as spread out as they may be, would take up time, and rescources....

I would still put my best bet on the Voth. I doubt seriously that even the combined forces of all the AQ forces including the Romulans and Cardasians in alliance with the Federation (including the Klingons) could beat the advanced technology of the Voth. I don't think that the even if the Dominion entered an alliance with the Federation it would help!
Nearly planet sized ships capable of trans-warp speeds that the Borg wouldn't even mess with? Remember that they do have a severe ax to grind against Earth and if they destroyed Earth and human beings everywhere in the universe then there could be no more claims of the "Distant Origin" theory and they certainly have the means to do so. It would definitely take Janeway and Voyager to stop them since they're the only Starfleet vessel to have dealt with them before and Chakotay devoloped a reportay with that Voth scientist in the first encounter "Distant Origin" (Voyager Season 3 Production #165 Disc 6 of the DVD collection). Of course you would have to ignore that pesky book recently published where they killed Janeway off but hey; who pays attention to S & S books anyway. I only heard about it and personally haven't read a ST book since high school since they are the lowest quality stories around because they pay the writers ca-ca (about $2,500 flat-rate with no royalty) and what self respecting writer would lower themself to writing for such a pitiful amount of money? I certainly wouldn't! S & S should be ashamed of themselves for trying to pass such crap off on the fans!!I diverge.... The Voth always presented the most alluring possiblity to reunite the crew of Voyager. Janeway would need the exact people she had before because anyone else wouldn't know how to handle it so it's absolutely..... perfect! ![]() |
